How
old should my dog be before training begins?
The moment your puppy or dog becomes a member of your family, whether
he's 6 weeks or older. [top]
Can
I begin even if my pup has not yet received all the necessary shots?
Yes. My training is taught in the comfort and safety of your own home.
In-home training poses a minimal health risk to your pup.
Remember that you should not take your dog outside on grass areas
or areas where he might catch a disease from another dog until he gets
all the shots usually around 4 to 6 months. When those have been completed,
your pup is safe for training in public locations. You ought to consider
including bordetella vaccinations along with your dog's annual boosters
for prevention of kennel cough, a highly contagious respiratory disease
among canines. [top]
My
dog is more than four years old, can I still train him?
Yes. All dogs of any age, and any breed are trainable. [top]
Do
I need to be part of the Training?
I highly recommend that you are involved in the lessons. I teach both
the dog and the owner. You the owner, are the primary student! My undertaking
is to teach you to better understand the motivation behind your dog's
actions, how to see through your canines perspective in order to alleviate
unwanted behaviors. Focusing on improving communication between you and
your companion through the use of positive motivation and reinforcement.
Thus, helping you build a healthy relationship. [top]
Do
you only train at my home?
No, during the sessions I am there to help you achieve your goals with
your dog. Example: if that includes your dog lunging at other dogs when
you go for a walk, we will go to different locations (parks, neighborhood
churches, or store fronts) to practice. [top]
What
benefit is it to me and my dog to have private lessons?
With private lessons you and your dog get to learn in the comfort of your
own home, where there are less distractions for you and your dog. You
get my 100% attention for one hour each week, and we tailor the lessons
to meet you and your dog's specific needs.[top]
Which
training methods do you use?
I use positive motivation and reinforcement, this includes treats, petting,
praise, and play to motivate your dog. I also use body language to communicate
with your companion, as this is the way dogs naturally "speak"
to each other. Training ought to be a fun experience, for you and your
pet. [top]
I
don’t have a lot of time to train. Is there going to be homework?
Yes, there will be. Dog training can be described as being a lot like
Weight Watchers - you can go to the weekly meetings, but it's what happens
during the week between meetings that makes the difference.
If you really don't have the time please see Training
by Trainer. [top]
I
have more than one dog, they all need training. Can I train all my dogs?
Yes, you can. [top]
How
do I get started?
I invite you to e-mail me with any further questions you may have. When
you are ready, give me a call to set up a training session at your home.
